Controllable Pitch Propeller: The Core Technology Reshaping Marine Propulsion

Jul 7, 2026 | Technical Literature | 0 comments

Since propellers replaced paddle wheels as the mainstream marine propulsion device in the mid-19th century, their design and performance have undergone continuous evolution. The transition from fixed pitch propellers (FPP) to controllable pitch propellers (CPP) is a technological breakthrough that fundamentally reshapes vessel maneuvering logic and power matching mechanisms, making CPP a core solution for modern high-end marine propulsion systems.

I. From Fixed to Adjustable: The Technological Divergence of Propellers

1. Limitations of Fixed Pitch Propellers

Fixed pitch propellers feature a simple, robust structure with low manufacturing and maintenance costs, delivering high operating efficiency under stable and constant working conditions. However, their limitations are equally prominent: the fixed pitch means the main engine can only achieve optimal power output at a specific sailing speed and load. Once operating conditions change, propulsion efficiency drops significantly. When the vessel needs to reverse, the rotation direction of the main engine must be reversed, resulting in cumbersome operation and slow response.

2. Working Principle and Core Advantages of Controllable Pitch Propellers

For a controllable pitch propeller, the blades can rotate around an axis perpendicular to the propeller shaft. Through a hydraulic control mechanism inside the propeller hub, the blade angle (i.e., pitch) can be adjusted at any time during navigation. The core advantage of this design is that forward movement, reverse movement, stopping and stepless speed regulation can be realized solely by adjusting the pitch, without altering the rotation direction or speed of the main engine. Compared with fixed pitch propellers, CPP reduces vessel stopping time by one third and cuts stopping distance by half.

3. Economic Value of CPP

The economic value of CPP is primarily embodied in its two exclusive operating modes.

      • Speed-pitch joint control mode

Exclusive to CPP, this mode coordinates shaft system speed with blade pitch to adapt to different cargo loads, sea conditions and sailing speeds, keeping the propeller in the optimal hydrodynamic working range at all times. It effectively addresses the pain points of low efficiency and surging fuel consumption of fixed pitch propellers under low-speed and variable working conditions, with prominent energy-saving benefits. Meanwhile, it can flexibly adjust the power absorption state to prevent main engine overload, reduce mechanical wear and extend the service life of the power system.

          • PTO/PTI power switching mode

Relying on the adjustable pitch feature, the main engine can maintain a constant speed to meet the constant-frequency and constant-voltage power generation requirements of the shaft generator. The Power Take-Off (PTO) mode utilizes surplus power of the main engine for power supply, reducing the start-stop frequency of auxiliary engines, lowering fuel consumption and maintenance costs, and aligning with low-carbon compliance requirements for vessels. When extra propulsion power is needed, the system can quickly switch to the Power Take-In (PTI) mode, with electric motors providing auxiliary propulsion to greatly improve vessel maneuverability and speed, and adapt to hybrid power operation demands.

II. Advance CPP: From Technology Introduction to Independent Global Leadership

Hangzhou Advance Gearbox Co., Ltd. (referred to as “Advance” hereafter) started its technical accumulation in the controllable pitch propeller field in 2006. It obtained technology transfer through cooperation with Masson Marine, a century-old French company, and subsequently established the CPP Propulsion System Research Institute with a professional R&D team. In 2008, Advance successfully developed China’s first domestically built controllable pitch propeller, filling the domestic technological gap; batch export was realized as early as 2009.

Over the following decade, Advance continued to digest, absorb and reinnovate the technology, developing three series of CPP products covering main engine power from 250 to 25,000 kW. After its public listing in 2010, Advance became the first domestic enterprise to realize integrated system matching of gearboxes, propellers and main engines.

At present, Advance’s CPP products cover full application scenarios including fishing vessels, offshore engineering vessels, research vessels, law enforcement vessels and special-purpose vessels.

With reliable product performance and efficient delivery services, Advance not only holds a leading share in the domestic market, but also exports products in batches to major global shipping regions such as South Korea, Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, earning wide trust from international shipowners.

III. Core Advantages of Advance CPP

The core competitiveness of Advance’s CPP system is reflected in five dimensions:

      • Full system integration capability

Advance provides a complete set of integrated solutions ranging from CPP, gearboxes, shaft generators, hydraulic systems to main propulsion control systems, eliminating the need for shipowners to coordinate with multiple suppliers separately, and delivering optimized system matching with superior adaptability and stability.

      • Complete technical system

The integrated oil cylinder-hub structure is compatible with large merchant ships and special-purpose vessels with a displacement of 1,000 to 20,000 tons; the technical indicators of its ice-class controllable pitch azimuth thruster have reached the international leading level.

      • Independent and controllable full industrial chain

Based on its proprietary technical system, Advance has realized fully independent manufacturing of core components and system integration, ensuring a stable and reliable supply chain. Its products continue to win wide recognition from international shipowners with high cost performance, fast delivery and global service capabilities.

      • Customization and full-life-cycle services

Advance can engage at the early vessel design stage, customize and optimize propulsion solutions according to vessel types and operating conditions, and provide full-life-cycle support including installation guidance, troubleshooting and routine maintenance.

      • Sufficient working condition verification

Advance’s CPP has been validated by decades of practical operation on thousands of vessels, maintaining stable performance under complex working conditions such as South American fishing grounds and polar ice zones.

From technology introduction to independent innovation, from local foothold to global service, Advance’s controllable pitch propeller system, with its complete technical system and independent, controllable full industrial chain capability, continues to provide reliable core power support for the efficient and intelligent upgrading of the global shipbuilding industry.
